Packing essentials for your Mekong River Cruise highlights

Even though you’re aboard a luxury river cruise, there’s no specific dress code to speak of. Sailing with Emerald Cruises through the heart of Southeast Asia, you’ll experience a relaxed setting, with an informal atmosphere prevailing during the day either on excursions, or on board your luxury Star-Ship, Emerald Harmony.

As a general guideline, keep it comfortable and cool during the day and smart casual for the evening. However, you may be tempted to dress-up a little, especially for special occasions like the Welcome and Farewell Receptions on board, or special dinners at the signature Reflections restaurant (if you do decide on evening dress attire, why not head to the salon for a glamorous make-over).

With temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius throughout the year, southern Vietnam and Cambodia share a similar tropical climate, so pack light, summery clothes, especially fabrics such as cotton or linen to keep you comfortable; a wide-brimmed hat or cap and a pair of sunglasses are also recommended.

While cruising the Mekong later in the day, relax by the pool with an Asian-inspired sundowner or soak up some of the evening’s outdoor entertainment on the Sun Deck, such as traditional lion dance performances. As temperatures tend to dip a little in the evening, you might find packing a light jacket, cardigan, or a shawl or pashmina handy.

Travelling in Southeast Asia’s wet or ‘green season’ (approximately late May, early June to October), if you’re planning to join any of the activities on shore, a lightweight waterproof jacket or raincoat, as well as attire made from quick-drying breathable fabrics, are recommended while out exploring. You’ll also find a complimentary umbrella provided in your Suite or Stateroom. Keep in mind though, during this season, rainfall invariably arrives in short, intense downpours before clearing, which you’ll find quite refreshing, as it helps keep the heat and humidity at bay.

Consider bringing casual exercise gear for fitness sessions in the well-equipped gym, or early morning activities on the Sun Deck extending to yoga and powerwalks around the walking track. For making the most of sunny skies and the inviting saltwater pool, be sure to pack your swim wear. For extra protection, high SPF-factor sunscreen is an essential item and perhaps a UV Top, especially while enjoying the swim-up views of the magical Mekong riverscape from the pool.

Additionally, consider packing practical and casual daytime wear – anything from shorts and linen trousers to mid-length skirts – for Emerald Cruises’ included shore excursions, extending to EmeraldPLUS cultural encounters. Immerse yourself in our complimentary range of small-group activities and excursions led by knowledgeable guides, to experience the rich tapestry of history, culture and traditions that await along the Mekong River – and beyond (interested in extending your trip? See the curated land tour itineraries in the region here).

Historical guided tours cover Hoi An, a former Silk Road trading port and one of Southeast Asia’s oldest towns and the Imperial Citadel in Hue, both, UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites located in Vietnam’s central provinces. Other highlights extend to exploring the magnificent Royal Palace, in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh and the war-time Cu Chi Tunnels, north of Ho Chi Minh City, while cultural immersions range from savouring a traditional Vietnamese royal dinner to listening to local folk singing.

At additional cost, our DiscoverMORE experiences – curated to special interests – extend to private cookery classes highlighting authentic regional cuisine and authoritative guided tours through a Ramsar-protected bird reserve, or a Cambodian silk farm.

Along the Mekong you’ll explore off-the-beaten-path communities and temples (which may also include a traditional Buddhist blessing from a resident monk) and other religious sites, where dress code standards are conservative. It’s important to dress modestly and respectfully, avoiding clothing that is too revealing or casual. Particularly on temple visits, clothing should cover the shoulders and knees; you’ll find shawls, long-sleeve tops, mid-length skirts, and long trousers ideal for this.

Whatever the onshore activity, a small, secure day bag is recommended, as well as comfortable walking shoes or sandals, preferably flat-soled with a good grip, particularly  when disembarking and embarking the ship along the Mekong’s riverbanks. Additionally, casual slip on, slip-off flat shoes are your best option for temple visits, respecting the region’s custom to take off footwear before entering.

On board your state-of-the-art Star-Ship, your luxury Suite or Stateroom comes fully stocked with bathrobe, slippers and hairdryer, as well as premium Bodia toiletries, locally produced, infused with gorgeous natural ingredients. It is, however, a good idea to bring your own medication and other personal supplies such as sunscreen and inspect spray, as stores and stock along the Mekong’s shores may be limited

For extra convenience and as a complimentary service, the laundry room provides self-service washing machines, dryers and an ironing board, helping you maintain your laundry needs as you cruise the Mekong. For additional convenience, select cabin grades also offer a complimentary number of clothing items laundered per day.

Whichever one of our inspiring itineraries you decide upon, the beauty of cruising the wondrous Mekong is that even though you’ll visit a myriad of enthralling destinations and a couple of Southeast Asian nations, you’ll only need to unpack once.
